EMBEDDED LEDs & LED BACKLIGHTING

Sometimes the AC/DC power requirements of EL lighting cause engineers to turn to the proven technology of LED backlighting.  LEDs can be used as we see here in this example image as surface mounted on a flexible circuit. This is use to bring selective backlighting to specific areas more so than lighting an entire panel evenly.

FIBEROPTIC BACKLIGHTING

Fiberoptic backlighting also uses LEDs for backlighting a membrane switch panel, vehicle dashboard, or similar application. Fiber optic backlighting panels can be integrated into panel assemblies and are ultra thin with tails connecting to the light source.  They provide even black lighting over a panel and have different design limitations than EL or SMT.
